Saving Our Lakes & Open Spaces (SOLOS), the group trying to influence development in the community, announced a donation to the Murieta Trails Stewardship Monday. The $1,131 check, funded by contributions from SOLOS members and others, will cover the stewardship’s insurance costs for a year as it maintains trails around the community.
“SOLOS has over 700 members, and many of them along with other interested community members made specific donations towards the cost of insurance for MTS to say thanks for all their hard work and efforts to keep our trails in good shape for all to enjoy,” SOLOS said in a joint announcement with the stewardship.

Cheryl McElhany, SOLOS president, and Patty Weaver, SOLOS treasurer, present a check to Jason Zenker of the Murieta Trails Stewardship.
Said Jason Zenker of the stewardship, “All MTS can say is WOW! A heartfelt thank you for all the tremendous support from SOLOS members and the community for helping reach Murieta Trails Stewardship’s entire annual goal to fund our insurance for another year! We will continue to maintain and improve the trail system in the coming year as a key stakeholder in the community working with all parties to ensure that a community-wide trail system is a permanent fixture in RM.”
The trails were started in the 1990s by neighbor Roger Brandt, working on land then owned by the Pension Trust Fund. The land was sold in 2013 to developers, who have granted the stewardship permission to maintain the dozen miles of existing trails, and the stewardship has agreed to stop building new ones.
Zenker invited the community to join the group in a seasonal cleanup of trails. Weather permitting, volunteers will meet 8 a.m. Saturday at the kiosk in the parking area at Puerto and Camino Del Lago drives. The stewardship suggests you bring a weed whacker, if you have one, or a rake, gloves and eye protection. There will be another cleanup day April 22, the group said.
